Cyprus has become an attractive destination for professionals seeking new opportunities in a Mediterranean setting. But what if you’re already in Cyprus on a Visitor Visa (also know as “Pink Slip”) and you would like to start working? Can you switch your status from Visitor to Work Permit holder?
The answer is yes – but the process involves important legal steps, gathering of documents and adherence to migration regulations.
Can I Switch from Visitor Visa to Work Permit in Cyprus?
In most cases, it is not possible to convert a Visitor Permit (also know as “Pink Slip”) into a Work Permit while remaining in Cyprus. The standard procedure requires the applicant to leave the country and apply for an Entry Permit, which is issued by the migration authorities on behalf of the employer. An Entry Permit allows an individual to enter Cyprus without a visa and can also be issued for family members of the main applicant (the work permit holder). After entering Cyprus with the Entry Permit, you must submit the required documents for the Work Permit within seven days of arrival.
Note that exception to the above-mentioned rule might apply, depending on your nationality, job category, and employer’s status. Some professionals, especially in regulated industries or working for international companies, may be able to complete certain parts of the process while still in Cyprus.
What is the Legal Pathway to Obtain a Work Permit in Cyprus?
To work legally in Cyprus, you must obtain a Work Permit, as employment or self-employment is not permitted under a Visitor Visa. You can work in Cyprus under one of the recognized employment categories, including:
- General Employment in a private company
- Employment in foreign interest companies
- Self-employment or entrepreneurship (under specific conditions)
